20050216ran8100122_017.JPG Description: Leading Seaman Medic Rebecca Johnston in the oxygen bank on HMAS Kanimbla. "I was enjoying a lunch with my mum Judith in Berowra (Bush Telegraph) when the phone rang" says Rebecca, but the Mosman local (Mosman daily) was happy to be a part of the HMAS Kanimbla crew. Rebecca joined the Navy in February 1997 from Naremburn, NSW (North Shore times) and as an underwater medical specialist, has been posted to the Submarine Underwater Medicine Unit (SUMU) at HMAS Penguin since September 2004. Whilst on HMAS Kanimbla, Rebecca has been a part of the emergency resuscitation team. This team has the first contact with incoming casualties, and it is their job to stabilise the patient prior to further medical aid. Rebecca has also worked ashore in the Anzac field hospital at Banda Aceh, both in the surgical and infectious disease wards. "Seeing the amount of devastation and then witnessing the resilience of the people of Aceh was a very humbling experience" she says.
